Its Georgian and Victorian terraces, tenements and the well-known colony houses all have traditional roofs that need a roofer who understands natural slate and lead, which is where Robert has spent much of his 22 years. Roofs here are often steep, high and closely packed, with shared chimneys and valleys between neighbouring properties. Robert plans each job carefully and explains clearly what affects you and what affects your neighbours. Stockbridge is a short distance from Robert's base in Edinburgh. Call him and he will tell you honestly when he can take a look. ### Property types in Stockbridge Stockbridge is characterised by Georgian and Victorian stone terraces and tenements with natural slate roofs, the Stockbridge Colonies with their distinctive small terraced houses, and a number of mews and converted buildings. ### Common roofing needs in Stockbridge - Natural slate repairs and re-slating - Lead valleys, flashings and dormer work - Chimney stack repairs and re-pointing - Cast iron and replacement gutter repairs - Skylight and Velux window repairs - Leak investigation on shared roofsCall Robert: 07756 375223Mon-Fri, 8:00am-5:00pm Services ## Roofing services available in Stockbridge Every service Robert offers is available to homeowners and landlords in Stockbridge. Local roofing problems ## Common roof problems in Stockbridge The age of the buildings, the local weather and the way homes in Stockbridge were built all shape the problems Robert sees most often. Knowing them helps him find the cause of a leak and fix it properly. ### Old, steep slate roofs Many Stockbridge roofs are well over a century old. Original slates can still be sound, but nails and battens fail, leading to slipped slates that let in water. ### Shared chimneys and valleys Terraces and colonies share chimneys, valleys and gutters with neighbours, so a problem on one roof can quickly become a problem for the next. ### Damp near the Water of Leith Low-lying streets near the river and mature trees keep roofs damp for longer, encouraging moss and blocked gutters. ### Conservation character Much of Stockbridge has strong historic character. Repairs should match existing materials and details, which calls for experience with traditional techniques. Left alone, even a small defect can let water into insulation, timbers and ceilings. If you have noticed damp patches, slipped slates or tiles, or water in the loft, it is worth getting the roof looked at sooner rather than later. ### Signs your Stockbridge roof needs attention Some warning signs are easy to spot from the ground or from inside the house. Look out for slates or tiles lying in the garden or gutter, gaps along the ridge, moss building up on the roof slopes, gutters overflowing in heavy rain, and staining or bubbling paint on upstairs ceilings. In the loft, daylight showing through, damp patches on the timbers or a musty smell all suggest water is getting in somewhere. If you spot any of these on your home in Stockbridge, call Robert and describe what you are seeing. He will tell you straight whether it sounds urgent, arrange to inspect the roof himself and explain the options before giving you a fixed price. There is no obligation to go ahead, and you will never be pressured into work you do not need.
